With Mumbai reporting 313 swine flu cases in the city in the month of June, the civic body has formed a 'death committee' that will probe each swine flu death. The committee was formed on the recommendation of a team of experts from the National Communicable Disease Centre (NCDC) that visited Mumbai, Thane and Pune in the last week of June. The experts observed that there was a change in the trend of swine flu cases in the city.
The first death committee meeting, which was held on July 3, saw the participation of a team of experts from various medical colleges. The committee reviewed the 10 swine flu deaths reported in the city till June 15, of which nine are confirmed H1N1 deaths.
"The current death toll this year is nine patients from Mumbai and six others from outside the city, but who came to Mumbai hospitals for treatment and passed away," said a senior health official.
"490 cases were reported from January to June 2017 out of which 383 cases are of residents of Mumbai, and 108 are out-of-Mumbai residents," said the latest civic health report.
Of the total number of swine flu cases, 56 per cent are males and 44 per cent are females. Those in the age group of 15-44 are the worst affected. Apart from 313 new swine flu cases in the month of June, the city has also reported 31 confirmed dengue cases. Around 249 patients with dengue-like symptoms were admitted to various civic hospitals.
